What is Animal Assisted Psychotherapy (AAP)?

AAP is a specialized form of therapy that goes beyond traditional counseling. While counseling is often sufficient for short-term needs, AAP is designed for individuals or families facing long-term dysfunctional patterns, trauma, or addiction. By interacting with animals, clients are challenged to process thoughts and feelings in real-time, helping them act and react in healthier, more productive ways.

How is AAP different from "regular" therapy?

Our clinicians use the same evidence-based methods as traditional therapists, but with a unique partner.

  • Passive Interaction: Sometimes an animal’s calm presence simply reduces anxiety and makes the environment feel safer.

  • Active Interaction: The therapist may design specific activities involving the animal to help you reach a therapeutic goal.

What does a typical session look like?

  • The Intake: Your first session is about gathering information and building trust. You’ll meet your therapist and likely their animal partner to see if the team is a good fit.

  • The Plan: We’ll create a customized treatment plan based on your goals.

  • Subsequent Sessions: Depending on your needs, sessions may involve talking in the office or interacting with animals in the barn, paddock, or on a walk.

Can I bring my own animal to therapy?

Generally, we work with our trained therapy animals. However, bringing a personal pet is sometimes part of Filial Pet Therapy (working on home behaviors). This must be pre-arranged and approved by your therapist to ensure the safety of our resident therapy animals.

Can I have therapy without an animal present?

Absolutely. All of our providers are highly qualified mental health professionals first. If you prefer traditional counseling without an animal, we are happy to accommodate that request.

Do you offer service animal training or certification?

No. We do not certify pets as service animals, therapy animals, or emotional support animals (ESAs). We also do not adopt out or "source" service animals. Our focus is strictly on therapeutic counseling and our AAT certificate training program.

Can you adopt an animal I need to rehome?

We currently do not have the capacity to adopt new animals. However, you are welcome to submit an Animal Surrender Form for our records should our capacity change.
