Couple & Family Therapy
When communication breaks down within a family, marriage, or relationship, it can feel like you’re speaking different languages. At AATPC, we use animal-assisted therapy to help couples and families find a common ground. Our therapy animals act as neutral "co-therapists," helping to lower defenses and open up new ways of connecting.
How Animals Help You Reconnect
-
De-Escalating Tension: It is much harder to maintain a heated argument when a therapy dog is resting its head on your knee or a bunny is hopping between you. The animal’s presence naturally lowers the "emotional temperature" in the room, allowing for calmer, more productive conversations.
-
A Mirror for Family Dynamics: Animals are highly sensitive to the energy in a room. By observing how an animal reacts to a family’s interaction, our therapists can help you see patterns of behavior—like tension, avoidance, or nurturance—in real-time.
-
Building Shared Empathy: Caring for a therapy animal together requires teamwork. Whether a couple is grooming a horse or a family is learning to approach a rescue animal gently, these shared goals help build a sense of "we’re in this together."
-
Safe Communication: Sometimes it’s easier to talk about the animal’s needs as a way to eventually talk about your own. This "indirect" approach is especially helpful for families with children who may feel caught in the middle of adult conflicts.
Tailored Sessions for Your Needs
We understand that every relationship is unique. We offer flexible settings to help you succeed:
-
The Meadow/Arena: Ideal for families and couples to practice leadership, boundaries, and cooperation through Equine-Assisted activities.
-
The Neighborhood Walk: A low-pressure way for couples to talk while walking a dog, moving away from the "face-to-face" intensity of an office.
-
The Office: A safe, contained space for focused emotional work with our smaller therapy animals.

Building a Stronger Foundation
We believe that effective therapy is a partnership. In our initial sessions, we work with you to understand the "heart" of your family or relationship and create a plan that respects your privacy and goals.
Your Privacy, Our Priority
Therapy is a significant investment in yourself or your child. We respect your right to privacy, choice, and dignity. We take a collaborative approach, ensuring you are a partner in every step of the treatment plan.
